And yet another former Tar Heel has found a home in the National Basketball Association. This time it’s shooting guard Wayne Ellington (6’4″/200 lbs), who has signed a two year deal with the Dallas Mavericks for over five million dollars, with some of the money being incentives included. Ellington, who enters his fifth season in the Association, has not had huge numbers, averaging 6.9 points & 2.0 rebounds per game, did a lot better last year when he was in Cleveland. With the Cavs Ellington averaged 10.4 points and 3.0 boards in about 40 games with the franchise.

From what I have read around the internet it seems that in Dallas the shooting guard will be competing for a starting job against another pick up by the Mavs, Devin Harris, as last season’s starter has moved on to another club. Even if the formerĀ National Champion does come off the bench he should easily see plenty of playing time, possibly being the sixth man for the Dallas club, and that should give him the chance of scoring the same, if not more, than he did with the Cavs last year. For Ellington, who was picked 28th in the `09 NBA Draft and has spent the past four seasons with three different teams, the first three with the Timberwolves, this should be a good fit.

As I do with all present and former Tar Heels, let me wish Wayne Ellington all the best with his new team and contract. For those of us that follow the former UNC basketball players at the next level, it will be interesting to see how the shooting guard does in the Big D!
