How close are we to college football? Well, close enough that everyday it seems more and more “watch lists” are coming out, that College Game Day is about seven weeks away, for those that are Tar Heel fans… that in nine days the 2013 ACC Football Kickoff will take place at the Grandover Resort, in Greensboro, N.C. The two day event is considered by most the unofficial start to the football season, where the conference shows up in full force, led by the commissioner John Swofford, and each of the schools send their head coach and two players, and where all the speculations and predictions for the upcoming seaosn begin.

I won’t be there, but if I was my one question to head coach Larry Fedora would be… last year you bought the players their rings, since the team was not eligible to win the Coastal Division, this year will it be the Atlantic Coast Conference handing them the rings?

It’s a loaded question and maybe an unfair one as well, since North Carolina has lost ten starters from last year, and that is a lot to replace, but they also do have one of the best quarterbacks in Bryn Renner, one of the two Heels going to the event along with senior DE Kareem martin, in the conference. The up tempo offense has all the team going faster than they ever did, and loving it, but without running back Giovani Bernard will the offense, as well as the special teams, be able to be as productive in 2013? Not a far reach to believe that this year’s squad could go as far as the senior quarterback takes them.

So, to answer my own question, it’s going to be up to the players stepping into the starting roles to provide the answer to whether or not North Carolina brings home the title in the Coastal Division. Renner, in his last year in Chapel Hill, is going to give his most, that there is no doubt, coach Fedora is going to put the team in a place where they can succeed, there is no doubt there as well, it’s going to be up to the players that we have not seen much playing time up to now to make the difference in the upcoming season.
